State of the Union: Cannabis Topicals Are Red-Hot, and Our Market Share is Still Growing

Colorado cannabis shops have sold a LOT of marijuana products in the last five years—and the market stats are eye-popping.

Looking at 2017 alone:

  • Over 400,000 pounds of flower were sold;
  • More than 1 million units of non-edible infused products were purchased;
  • 14 percent more plants were cultivated than the previous year; and
  • More than 1,000 medical and retail dispensaries served customers.

Every year, more cannabis topical products hit the market. And every year, Mary Jane’s Medicinals’ market share keeps growing as more customers turn to us for effective, tried-and-true cannabis lotions, salves, balms and more.

In 2014, the state Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) started tracking numbers of products sold in the new adult-use market, along with medical-cannabis sales. Mary Jane’s Medicinals had 4 percent of the market share of infused non-edible products. In 2015, it was 5 percent. In 2016, as we expanded production and distribution, and more people found our products, our share of the market climbed to 10 percent. In 2017, we kept growing, and represented 13 percent of the Colorado market.

What’s especially impressive about last year is that from 2016 to 2017, overall sales of non-edible infused products in Colorado held steady, but sales of Mary Jane’s Medicinals products increased 27 percent.

In fact, our internal numbers show that we have averaged 42 percent growth in sales every six months over the past five years. In that time, our staff has grown from 3 to 13.  We’ve expanded our product line from the original massage oil to include salve, lip bong, lotion, Heavenly Hash bath and tinctures.

And here’s some good news for our customers who’ve come from far and wide to get our products in Colorado: We’re currently working on expansion into other states, and we look forward to introducing our products to people across the nation who can benefit from their soothing effects.
