How Legal Marijuana is Giving Massage Therapists in Cannabis-Legal States a Boost

The marijuana massage movement is gaining steam.

In the world of massage therapy, cannabis topicals can be life-changing.

While my background as a massage therapist in Colorado helped inform my creation of a line of cannabis-infused topicals, I’m definitely not the only massage therapist whose career got a boost from legal cannabis.

Adult-use legalization has famously made Colorado a cannabis tourism destination. And the wide availability of cannabis topicals has made the state a marijuana-massage-and-spa vacation destination as well.

“If the marijuana massage movement has a heartland, it’s the Rocky Mountain State,” says journalist David Downs on the health-focused website Reset.Me. The Spa Industry Association calls CBD-infused massage therapy “the hottest buzz in the spa world.” And one Colorado massage therapist who’s made CBD and THC part of his practice told Massage Magazine that the people flocking to the state for cannabis retreats and spa services have been “a gold rush.”

Cannabis topicals have much appeal for people who have made massage their vocation.

Using cannabis topicals on clients will not get you or the client high, as the cannabinoids in topicals don’t penetrate the blood-brain barrier. You won’t fail drug tests from using cannabis topicals, either.

Many massage therapists like using cannabis-infused oils and lotions because the products can make their own bodies feel better after hours of intense, demanding physical work. And clients frequently report they leave their sessions more relaxed and with more pain relief when their therapists use these products. “I will forever work with cannabis for the rest of my career,” massage therapist Jordan Person told The Cannabist after she began offering massages featuring Mary Jane’s Medicinals products.

It’s important to note state and local laws vary for licensed massage therapists using cannabis topicals, so if you’re interested, do some research on regulations in your area.

At Mary Jane’s Medicinals, we’ve received many testimonials over the years about the ways our products have changed people’s lives and relieved serious suffering.

For a growing number of Americans, a topical may be their first-ever experience with cannabis—and they likely feel more comfortable when it comes recommended by a trusted massage therapist, and has no psychoactive effects. This is why long ago I dubbed topicals “the perfect cannabis ambassador.”

Moses Mendez, a California massage therapist who’s integrated topicals into his business, argues the worlds of cannabis and massage therapy are an ideal match: “Their industry and our industry are all compassion-based,” he tells The Cannifornian.

And I couldn’t agree more.
