Cannabis Topicals and Women’s Health: What You Need to Know
As anyone who has experienced menstrual cramps can attest, they are no fun.
But here’s some good news you might not have heard yet: Research is beginning to show that cannabis topicals for menstrual cramps can help provide real relief.
It’s not a complete mystery as to why cannabis topicals have been found to help with cramps, which are caused in part by inflammation. Multiple research findings tell us that cannabis has legitimate, widely accepted anti-inflammatory properties.
And more scientific research conducted in recent decades reveals other ways cannabis can provide a measure of relief. In 2017, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released a comprehensive review of 10,000 scientific abstracts published since 1999 that found conclusive evidence of cannabis as an effective tool in treating and managing pain and nausea.
And there are other ways that cannabis topicals can help with the discomfort that comes with a woman’s period. During your menstrual cycle, the hormones estrogen and progesterone rise and fall. These fluctuations can cause other problems tied to pain, inflammation and nausea, including:
- Migraines
- Backaches
- Pain in your abdomen, hips or thighs
- Nausea / vomiting
- Mood swings
- Bloating
- Acne breakouts
It’s common knowledge that heat is a good way to get cramping, aching muscles to relax. Hot baths or showers can also help by increasing blood flow to your uterine area, which in turn causes the muscles there to relax. We recommend a nice long soak in our Heavenly Hash Bath, which is perfect for women out there who are feeling stressed or in need of a mood lift at any time of month or life.
At Mary Jane’s Medicinals, we know that there are a lot of other herbs and plants out there besides cannabis that can be beneficial. That’s why all of our products include a collection of tried-and-true herbal remedies.
For example, our Heavenly Hash Bath includes Epsom salts that soothe sore back muscles and ease muscle strains. Another prominent ingredient in our fan-favorite Hash Bath is Dead Sea salts, which contain magnesium that combats fluid retention and bromides that help relax muscles. Lavender provides relief from stress and promotes relaxation and sleep. Peppermint—used in many of our products—not only smells nice but is also associated with helping to relieve cramps, nausea, acne, headaches, stress and emotional imbalance.
Our salve, massage oil and body lotion have a base of grape seed oil, which has anti-inflammatory properties, as do the avocado and jojoba oils that are part of the blend. The salve also includes emollient coconut oil and beeswax, which are known to soothe acne and skin irritations. The essential oil of orange, another special ingredient, is known for reducing inflammation and spasms while lifting mood and sex drive.
Our fast-acting tincture is often used to battle acne breakouts; the antibacterial properties of cannabis can help clear infections, and the tincture contains alcohol that removes oil and cleanses the skin. Another factor: Preliminary research indicates cannabinoids affect our sebaceous gland function, and have shown potential as a promising therapeutic agent for acne. The tincture also includes arnica, which is known to aid relief for sore muscles and inflammation.
Of course, our topical products are here to help women during other phases of life as well. Some of our customers use our lotion to help diminish the appearance of stretch marks or C-section scars. Others use the salve on aching joints. Still others are keeping the signs of aging at bay as they massage our fast-absorbing lotion or massage oil onto their face and hands, letting the cannabis and essential oils work their magic.
